What is Padel Tennis?

Updated: Nov 21, 2024

Padel tennis, often just called padel, is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. It's played on a smaller, enclosed court with glass walls and a mesh fence. Here’s a basic rundown:

  • Court: The court is about one-third the size of a tennis court, measuring 20x10 meters (65.6x32.8 feet). It’s surrounded by walls that players can use to bounce the ball off, similar to squash.

  • Rackets: Players use solid, perforated rackets with no strings. These rackets are typically made of composite materials and have a perforated surface.

  • Ball: The ball is similar to a tennis ball but slightly less pressurized, which affects its bounce.

  • Rules: Padel is usually played in doubles, with two players on each team. The basic rules are quite similar to tennis. Players serve underhand and the ball must first bounce on the ground before hitting the glass walls. After the ball bounces, it can hit the walls, and it’s still in play. The game is scored in the same way as tennis, with points, games, and sets.

  • Objective: The main objective is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent’s side of the court in such a way that they cannot return it. The use of the walls allows for some interesting strategic play and makes the game quite dynamic.

Padel has gained popularity in many countries, especially in Spain and Latin America, and is growing in other parts of the world as well.
